Macc boxers going global

MACCLESFIELD Boys Boxing Club’s impressive reach is taking young fighters around the world.

Head coach Kevin Bradbury has just returned from a recent trip to Las Americas, Tenerife, looking to set up a link between the local canary island boxing club, Escuela de Boxeo de Arona.

While out there Kevin and his son Sam, along with a handful of young MBBC boxers who had travelled with him, trained at the club with some British ex-pats who have settled in Tenerife and are boxing out of the gym regularly.

Kevin said: "The club was a spectacular place, well worth a visit if you’re out there on vacation. The coaches were very accommodating and did a number of rounds on the pads with Sam.

"After training out there, you can understand why the likes of Nigel Benn and Naseem Hamed used the area as their training camp prior to some of their professional bouts."

MBBC’s Liam Hanarahan is due to go to the Las Americas club at the end of month and the link was forged for him and other Macc fighters to gain valuable experience by sparring with the best boxers that Tenerife has to offer.

There are plans currently being put in place for MBBC to take a team out to the Canary Islands and take on opponents from Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

The youngsters making the trip will do some high altitude training on Mount Tidie.
