A club on the up

MACCLESFIELD Boys’ Boxing Club is on a mission to develop the fight game in the borough, and bring back some ABA championships.

The club’s coaches recognise the importance in this day and age, of teaching the youngsters the value of hard work through ‘life skills’ and the all-round benefits of exercise, including general fitness and conditioning, motivation, diet, discipline and respect for each other and their surroundings.

Coach Jez Hough said: "We all strive to provide a safe environment for the young people of the borough, and we think we provide a community focused, safe and professionally-run boxing club. We all give our time on a voluntary basis and are fully committed to giving back to the sport we have been involved with for so many years."

The club now has more than a hundred young fighters on its books and Jez says that he and head coach Kevin Bradbury plan to continue the growth and oversee their carded boxers to ABA titles.

"All the boxers work hard in training," he added. "They realise the importance of being at peak fitness within the season."

The club’s recent showcase event at Wilmslow Leisure Centre saw 10 wins for the local lads, and several boxers will join the East Lancs select squad to take on Staffordshire next month.

The junior ABA novice championships take place in May and each of these represents a chance for the boxers to earn themselves international fights.

  • ONE OF MBBC’s most experienced fighters, Joe Collins, has had a busy time in the ring, with bouts against Long Lane ABC’s Paul Lovett and Leon Carr, of Newbury and Farnworth.

    Boxing impressively in each, he was unfortunate not to build on his success at the Wilmslow event.

    He worked at a higher tempo against Lovett and, against the stylish southpaw Carr, relied on jabs and inside punches.

    The younger Collins brother was unfortunate to be on the wrong end of decisions in the matches, but Jez said: "Experience comes with more bouts against different styles of boxers, and Joe and myself are looking forward to the next one."
