Macclesfield & District FA Cup Final
Bollington Athletic 3
Poynton 2

A GOAL apiece for the Quigley brothers, Martin and Andy, helped Bollington Athletic defeat Mid-Cheshire League rivals Poynton and lift the Macclesfield & District FA Cup Final at Moss Rose on Sunday.

Bollington took an eighth-minute lead when Martin Quigley capitalised on a defensive mix-up and headed past a stranded Nick Cantello.

But Poynton rallied and were level seven minutes later. Curtis Thompson headed down John Critchlow's cross and Mike Carol bundled the ball home.

Critchlow then shaved the post from 22 yards but Athletic regained the lead when striker Alex Donaldson drove a low shot past Cantello on 33 minutes.

The lively Donaldson, brother of professional golfer Jamie, could have put the final beyond doubt before half-time but he volleyed wide.

However, Bolly extended the lead in the 55th minute when two Poynton players collided and Andrew Quigley struck from the edge of the area.

Athletic appeared to be cruising to victory until Paul Ashwell handed the London Road side a lifeline when he fired home a Sam Hadfield cross with eight minutes left, but Bollington held on to claim the Cup.

"I had a funny feeling it would end 3-2 but our early goal was crucial and enabled us to build on our game plan," said a jubilant Bollington manager, Derek Druce. "All credit to the Poynton lads though they worked hard."
