THE Poynton Under-16s are toasting sweet success having ended the season in fine style.

The 'Blackbirds' defeated arch-rivals Manchester Waconians to be crowned the new Junior and Schools Cup winners at Brooklands Sports Club, Sale.

Having dismissed Brooklands and Sheffield Steelers in earlier rounds of the competition, the ambitious London Road North teenagers reached the final by beating Stockport with an overtime golden goal winner in a thrilling semi-final clash.

In the final Poynton proved too strong for a spirited Wacs team. In the first quarter they quickly raced into a 4-0 lead.

Slick passing and clinical finishing, backed by a strong and powerful defence, saw the lead extend to 9-2 at half-time.

Poynton maintained their intensity in the second half and were ahead 13-3 at the end of the third quarter, before eventually running out 16-4 victors.

With the Junior and Schools Cup returning to the club, Poynton coach Ian Wicks and his assistants John Adshead and James Cox had successfully guided the team to remain unbeaten throughout the whole season.

Poynton scorers were: Sam Russell (four goals and four assists), Jonny Nicholls (five and two), Tom Giddings (two and three), Tom Crank (four), Matt Haughton (one and two), Tom Little (one assist).
