YOUNG canoeing star Alfie Wright is well on the way for future glory, despite his relative inexperience on the water.

Alfie has made remarkable progress in the early stages of his kayaking career and, after moving up the grades from Division Three to Division Two, has just been selected to benefit from top coaching at a two-day talent development camp.

The 11-year-old was selected as part of a three-man team to represent the north west at the junior setion of the British Open Championships, where two Olympic silver medallists, the world number six and the British champion were also competing.

The training camp will improve Alfie’s skills, but he has already made astounding progress and, in August, completed a white water slalom training course on treacherous Grade Three water in the river Tay.

The Bollinbrook Primary School pupil first competed in the sport just over a year ago, having turned 10 years old and will boost his already excellent skills with some of the most up-to-date video, profiling, fitness and conditioning, nutrition and sports psychology training.

Bollinbrook head teacher Mike Waters said: "He is a very talented young man and we’re all very proud of what he has achieved so far."
