The introduction of the new QCF Plumbing Courses-level 2 diploma is expected to improve the job prospects of new trainees.  The diploma, which has replaced all current plumbing courses, has been hailed by the industry as a great improvement to plumbing courses.

From March 2011, the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) has been implemented into many vocational training programmes.  This has been done to improve the older courses in the following areas:

• Improve the skills gap between trainee’s knowledge and employee’s requirements
• Standardise training across the EU meaning its trainees could potentially work throughout the EU confidently
• Provide experience as the new plumbing courses now include valuable on site experience to its trainees
• Interchangeable units which give trainees the option to specialise in a specific area to boost their skill set and job prospects

This has particularly affected the plumbing and mechanical services industry, which now offers two plumbing courses for trainees to follow:

• Diploma in Plumbing and Heating Level 2 6189-11
This award focuses on the general plumbing work any domestic or commercial plumber will carry out, including; internal drainage, above ground drainage, rainwater and guttering installation.

• Diploma in Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Level 2 6189-21
This diploma acts as a stepping stone to anyone who wants to become Gas Safe registered as there is a greater focus on heating and gas work.

The Benefits of a Diploma
Diplomas are recognised as a valid qualification and endorsement of competence by the industry, employers and across the European Union.   Trainees will be better prepared for a career as a plumber as the inclusion of onsite experience will strengthen their skills base.

The new awards must be adopted by all training providers and colleges to strengthen the skills of the new work force.  Many of these will not however implement this until the start of the school year in September.

RF Training is a City & Guilds accredited training provider offering a selection of vocational courses.  The new plumbing diploma is now available here to all new trainees. Find out more about the new plumbing courses today.
