MAYBE it stems from being an only child in a very small family but I've always gone to inordinate lengths to keep in touch with people I know. I hate saying goodbye to friends when they move away and I rarely forget a birthday. I sent a Christmas card for 30 years to an ex neighbour until last year when I found out he'd been dead since 1979.

I WAS hosing the kennel runs down with cold water when I heard the silage team arrive. The weather forecasters predicted a few hot dry days and suddenly contractors appeared out of nowhere. Huge mowers swept up and down the fields blazing their way well into the night, the cut grass soon stacked in neat rows.
