A new initiative at a church is turning tradition on its head.
That’s because the pews of King Edward Street Chapel, Macclesfield, aren’t just being filled by the congregation, they’re also hosting an assortment of people selling crafts and wares from between the seats.
Rent-a-Pew lets traders pay to place their stalls in the church for the day, and sell to residents and visitors.
All of the rental fees go towards the upkeep of the building, and the event takes place on the last Sunday of every month to coincide with the town’s Treacle Market.
Attendees can also take a load off as they get pampered in the relaxation zone.
Clare Reavey, a member of the church who started the event, said: “We started it last year and it is going really well.
“People have been packing into the pews.
“We used to have a book stall on Treacle Market.
“But then I started making my own goods so the idea to do something at the church just came to me.
“Hopefully we can go from strength to strength-to-strength now.”
