A man was caught committing a lewd act while peering through the window of a house – then told police he had only been trying to see what was on television.

Joseph Bottoms, of Thorneycroft Street, Macclesfield, was caught by officers after a woman spotted him with his trousers down outside her neighbour’s house.

Bottoms, 27, admitted voyeurism at a hearing at Macclesfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (August 28).

After police arrested him Bottoms said he had only been trying to see what was on the woman’s TV before deciding to commit the lewd act on a ‘crazy impulse’.

Kate Marchuk, prosecuting, said a neighbour of the victim confronted Bottoms after spotting him in the middle of the night.

She said: “It was between quarter past midnight and half past midnight when a woman was woken by a loud bang.

“She looked out of her window and saw Mr Bottoms looking through the window.

“She could see he had his trousers lowered.

“She went outside and spoke to Mr Bottoms, saying ‘that’s disgusting’.”

Ms Marchuk added: “(The complainant) said she was disturbed and felt violated.

“Mr Bottoms said in a police interview that he was curious as to what was on TV and so looked through the window.

“He saw her sleeping on the sofa.

“He admitted she was attractive and said he was not thinking clearly.

“He accepts his behaviour was distressing.

“He said it was a crazy impulse.”

Bottoms, defending himself, said: “I did something wrong.

“I am an adult and I accept responsibility.”

He is due to be sentenced at the same court at a later date when a pre-sentence report has been prepared for the magistrates.
