Kind-hearted volunteers helped the community by wrapping their Christmas presents at Macclesfield's Grosvenor Centre.

The group of dedicated gift wrappers were on hand for four days during December to help present-buyers who were in need of some help to make their gifts extra special.

It included Rhona Marshall MBE, Monica Meah, Denise Volpato and Pat Ormesher.

Rhona said: “During the time we spent wrapping we met lots of different people from around the town. We wrapped a gift for 99-year-old Freda Pidgeon, who while we were wrapping spent time chatting to Jim Tryon, who is 90 yrs old and was involved with the Christmas wrap in Macclesfield Grosvenor Centre. Collectively their ages add up to 189 years, which is amazing.”

Rhona is also currently organising a Spring Ball at the Tytherington Club to help raise money for children in Uganda.

The ball is being organised with the help of friends and member of her charity Christian Relief Uganda, to aid children involved with Maria’s Care.

Maria's Care is the name of the primary school which educates 406 pupils including 30 deaf students.

There is also accommodation for more than 80 children who live a long way from the school, many of which don’t have electricity at their homes and choose to be living where they can study at night.

Rhona added: “The children all recognise education is very important and can get them out of the poverty trap.

“The school is situated in Kamuli a rural area in the North of Uganda the project includes running its own primary school, pre-school and unit for the deaf and also supports grandmothers who have sadly been left to look after their grandchildren due to their parents dying.”

And Rhona is now urging people to help sponsor the event, which will take place on March 7, and make a difference to the lives of the people the charity supports.

Rhona said: “We are looking for sponsors to help us in any way they can to support this venture as well as other areas of Maria’s Care.

“Well in advance of the event we are going to print a programme with names of sponsors in and during it we will have advertising cards on the tables, so it is a good way of promoting your business while supporting a very worthy cause.

"As the event is taking place just before Easter I feel this will be a very good opportunity for businesses such as florists, jewellery shops, bakers and others to advertise their wares. During the night the band “Undercover” will perform. it is a local group, as some of the band members are from Poynton and Langley.

“We have been teaching deaf children at Maria’s Care for nearly 16 years and want to do more for them and support our other work with children and the elderly.”
