Candidates battling to become Macclesfield's next MP are going head to head in a public debate tonight (April 16).

Residents will get the chance to quiz election hopefuls about the issues that matter to them at the husting event.

Organised by Poynton Churches Together, the debate will take place at Poynton Baptist Church at 7.30pm.

Each candidate will get three minutes to make a personal statement followed by a question time.

Reverend Neil Brighton who has organised the event said: "The first part, will consist of three chosen questions. As people arrive they will be invited to suggest what they think is the most important question at this election.

"Whilst the candidates are doing their statements these will be collated and three questions, which pick out the predominant themes will be put to the candidates.

"The second part, which will make up the bulk of the evening, will be questions put from members of the public.

"This part will last at least 30 minutes, probably somewhere in the region of 45 minutes.

"I will probably conclude the evening by asking the question: 'what one thing would you like voters to take away from this evening', to give the candidates an opportunity to sum up.

"How long the whole evening takes will depend a bit on how many people come and how many questions are asked. However, we will have a formal finish before 9pm."

The husting is one of four taking place across the constituency.

It is the first time in more than 40 years that all Macclesfield election candidates have agreed to debate policies in public.

There will be refreshments afterwards and a chance for members of the public to approach candidates if they have any more questions.
