Macclesfield's six General Election candidates have each been given the opportunity to explain to voters why they should choose them at the polls on Thursday. These are their submissions...

John Knight (Green):

"Many of you may be wondering how to choose tomorrow between Tweedledum, Tweedledee, and Tweedledon’t know...

"However, there is a real alternative to the identikit grey parties. Everyone knows that the Green Party stands for the environment. However, we are also the party of social justice.

"While the other parties are all talking about cuts, we argue for a Green New Deal, creating a million jobs and training places.

"The Green Party calls for an end to public money being wasted on botched health privatisation schemes.

"A Green government would divert money currently being wasted on huge road projects (about £30bn) to bring trains under public ownership and ensure services improve. We’d reduce fares by 10 per cent.

"Green MPs will fight for a basic non-means tested pension of £170 a week (£300 for couples).

"Don’t waste your vote on May 6 – vote Green, because ‘Fair is Worth Fighting For.’"

Brendan Murphy (Independent):

"David Cameron says "Time for CHANGE". And so it is in Macclesfield, change to a fresh approach – GO INDEPENDENT!

"Party machines dominate politics. They think safe seats are theirs. Backbenchers – and even ministers – have to stay on-message or risk losing their jobs.

"Independent MPs are free to speak the truth and speak for you. They vote on the merits of each issue, not on party lines.

"Coalitions force parties to work in the national interest. That stabilises the financial markets and increases business confidence

"Other candidates make promises. But I am asking people to vote for me on my record of service to Macclesfield.

"Having lived here over 40 years and worked in public and private sectors, I have a portfolio of experience, knowledge and skills to enable me to be an effective MP for you and your family."

Jacqueline Smith (UKIP):

"Out of Europe we would keep the free trade agreement – you can vote for any party when we start again.

"We could have self-sufficiency, own our own borders and seas and realise incalculable savings.

"Let’s put the Great back in Britain. It’s your choice."

Roger Barlow (Lib Dem):

"On May 6, Macclesfield electors can vote for a real clean-up in politics, for action on climate change, for a fair tax system that helps those that need it most, for the protection and improvement of our health and education systems, and for a responsible but effective reduction of the public sector deficit that doesn’t damage the fragile recovery.

"These are the issues that people have asked about in the campaign, and it’s clear that they feel strongly about them. The Liberal Democrats - unlike the two old parties - have the ideas and the will to deliver.

"As an MP I would look forward to helping with local issues that make Macclesfield what it is – the town centre regeneration, preserving and opening up our heritage, local roads and homes and jobs.

"My aspiration is to be as well-known locally as Sir Nick – though for rather different reasons."

Adrian Heald (Labour):

"After all the millions of words spoken and written in this campaign, voters face a straight choice on May 6 – do they want David Cameron who is the front man for a raft of retrograde and hackneyed Tory policies or Gordon Brown standing up for ordinary people in Britain?

"On the doorstep last weekend I met many undecided voters. The Conservative policy proposals have failed to inspire people. A Conservative Government would always ensure that vested interests are served, while the rest of us, including hard working families, are left to sink or swim.

"A Labour Government will ensure fairness and delivery of full employment in Britain. That is the only way to tackle inequality.

"Labour is the only party that can challenge the Conservatives in Macclesfield. It is time for change here. If elected as your MP, I will bring innovation and a fresh approach to democracy."

David Rutley (Conservative):

"I am committed to being a strong voice for Macclesfield, if elected as your local member of Parliament.

"We live in Macclesfield and our four young children attend local schools.

"I will work tirelessly to tackle issues that matter most to Macclesfield.

"It’s essential to revitalise Macclesfield town centre and strengthen our local economy. I will fight to keep health care local at Macclesfield Hospital, work for safer communities, protect our countryside and tackle traffic congestion in Poynton and Disley.

"As Conservatives, we will work to get our economy moving again, restore trust in Parliament, value family life and ensure that Europe interferes less in our lives.

"There is only one party that can bring about this change – the Conservatives. A vote for any other party is a vote for more of the same under Gordon Brown."
