Two new neighbourhoods could be created after a £100,000 grant to develop brownfield land.

Cheshire East Council won the money from the government to prepare two brownfield sites near Macclesfield town centre for development.

The council will not reveal where the sites are but they could provide 300 homes.

Brownfield sites are land which have previously been built on and is considered harder to develop due to the extra costs to get it ready for building, such as contamination checks.

The money will go towards those extra bills so developers can build homes.

This could be welcome news for campaigners who want Macclesfield’s brownfield developed before the green belt.

Karen Carsberg, strategic housing manager, said creating the new neighbourhoods is part of the council’s aim to build on brownfield first.

She said: “The project aims to increase housing in Macclesfield’s urban area.

"The money will be spent on technical reports, professional fees and other administrative costs and public consultation.

"We cannot name the sites because we have to do feasibility testing before a public consultation.”
