Three people were taken to hospital following a horror smash between two cars.

The head-on collision, which involved a Hyundai Coupe and a VW Polo, happened on Congleton Road at Marton at about 3.30pm on Monday, March 14.

A witness said off-duty army medics travelling behind one of the vehicles were first on the scene and helped treat the injured before paramedics arrived.

The driver of the VW Polo, a 29-year-old man from Davyhulme, suffered serious leg injuries and was treated by paramedics before being taken to Wythenshawe Hospital by Air Ambulance. His passenger, a 27-year-old man from Stretford, was taken to Wythenshawe hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 52-year-old from Mow Cop, was taken to North Staffordshire Hospital.

Gawsworth Road was closed in both directions for three hours.

Fire crews from Macclesfield, Alsager and Congleton assisted at the scene and used environmental pads to absorb fluid which had leaked from both vehicles.

Pete Smith, a technician working at Barlows Agri Ltd, which is only 50m from the crash site, described the scene as ‘complete mayhem’.

He said: “From what I understand one of the lads had a badly broken leg, while the other one was hardly touched. When you see the damaged caused to the vehicles, it is amazing that the injuries weren’t more serious.

“There were a bunch of army medics who were about five cars back. They helped out.”

The crash happened on Monday, March 14, on Congleton Road, Marton

Mr Smith slammed the behaviour of some motorists caught up in traffic caused by the accident.

He added: “There was a shocking amount of impatience from people, with cars driving on a grass verge to get around the crash scene. One HGV then got stuck on the verge and we had to tow it off to clear it the area in case the air ambulance needed to land there.

“It was complete mayhem.”

Express Facebook follower Carol Wain described the area where the collision happened as a ‘notorious accident spot’ while Clare Griffies said: “That road is so dangerous, they need to put it to 30 thro (sic) the village with speed cameras. So many accidents.”
