A swimming club banned from holding lessons at Macclesfield Leisure Centre is urging residents to sign a petition to keep the club going.

Everybody Sports and Recreation (ESAR), a trust that runs the council’s leisure services, has told Macclesfield Amateur Swimming Club (MASC) it can no longer teach there, and ESAR will instead run its own lessons.

Janice Whitelaw, chairman of the 120-year-old volunteer led club, has launched a petition against the ruling, and is urging readers and pool users to support them. Some lessons will cease before April 1.

She said: “We invited ESAR and councillors to a meeting but only Coun Mick Warren came. ESAR won’t listen to us.”

Petitions are at Boots in the Grosvenor Centre, Tesco on Hibel Road, Hurdsfield Road Post Office, Spring Garden on Hurdsfield Road, and in schools.

Janice added: “It’s so important people sign. Swimming is a life skill and if only ESAR can teach it, some will miss out and won’t learn how to swim.”

Cheshire East Council said the club could hire the pool at subsidised rates but not hold lessons.
