Students are rethinking their futures this Christmas after Macclesfield College announced it is ceasing its A-level courses.

The college , which is part of the Macclesfield Learning Zone campus with Macclesfield Academy, announced the decision two days before the end of term.

It won’t do A-levels from next September, concentrating instead on ‘vocational courses’. Students already enrolled on A-levels will be able to finish them.

The news is a shock to students who were planning to start A-levels and are now considering their options.

This includes Charlotte Morgan, 15, who planned to study chemistry, biology, law and psychology and was due to attend an interview in the new year.

Charlotte, who lives on Windmill Street with mum Vicky, stepdad Simon Tuckman and sister Megan, said: “This has ruined my Christmas because I’m going to be worrying about finding another college with all of my chosen courses in such short time. If I can’t find one, I’m going to have to rethink my whole college studies.

“The other colleges are far away from my home which means I will have to travel and spend a lot of money.

“I want to study forensic anthropology at university and I need these A-levels.”

More than 70 students were awarded A-levels at the college this summer. The college serves as the sixth form for neighbouring Macclesfield Academy.

It offers apprenticeships for students to study for qualifications such as NVQs and Diplomas while working in various industries.

A college spokesman said the decision was taken after ‘an extensive review of A-levels’.

He said: “The college’s executive leadership team and governing body have consulted with other local sixth form providers and taken regional and national information into consideration.

“Alternatives to A-levels include a wide range of vocational courses which provide direct routes to universities and employment and our team of expert teaching staff would be delighted to discuss these options with customers.

“Macclesfield College also offers a high quality information, advice and guidance service about the options available for post 16-study.”

There is a guidance event for students who have already applied for A-levels on Thursday, February 4 from 5pm to 6pm.Contact the customer services team on 01625 410002.
