Battle of the Somme

IT IS the 90th anniversary of one of the most infamous battles in British military history. On the Somme in France, there were 60,000 casualties in a single day - July 1 1916. Every community was touched by the battle, including Macclesfield. Here, reporter JAMES CRISP looks at the role Maxonians played in a battle which ultimately led to the death of 500,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers.

Over the top, boys!

ONLY one of the eight Macclesfield men killed on the first day of the battle lies in a marked grave - the remains of the others were lost forever in no-man's land.

 

Final resting places

IN THE final part of our three part series, we tell the stories of the other four brave Maxonians, who fell on that blood drenched day in 1916. And we finish our series, which has taken in the men volunteering, training, fighting and dying by looking at their final resting places in Macclesfield, Bollington and France.
