A blanket of snow has arrived in hilly areas over Macclesfield.

The Cat and Fiddle received the heaviest flurries prompting the council’s gritting fleet to be deployed.

The A537 is open to traffic and there have been no reports of major problems on the roads network.

A yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office yesterday predicted snow and ice until 11am today.

This risk of snow is greater on higher ground.

The freezing cold weather could be in part due to a disruption to the Polar Vortex.

The Polar Vortex is an area of low pressure that is parked in the polar regions. Sometimes the low pressure area of weather is pushed southward and part of it can break off and bring extremely cold air Britain’s way.

Cheshire East Council urges people to check in on their friends and neighbours, especially if they are older or if they have heart or breathing problems.
