New review of hospital decision is announced

7/ 2/2007

JUST weeks after Macclesfield breathed a sigh of relief, women and children's services at the hospital could again be under threat.

In December, it was decided eight hospitals would be developed as centres of excellence, with Macclesfield spared cuts. But now Salford Overview and Scrutiny Committee has requested that the Secretary of State review this outcome, who in turn has asked the Independent Reconfiguration Panel to look at the merit of the decision.

Chairman of East Cheshire NHS Trust, Kathy Cowell, said: "I am surprised, we always knew someone might challenge the decision process, but it was independently validated and in line with Government policy."
