Jenni shares cancer news with listeners
27/12/2006
BROADCASTER Jenni Murray OBE has been diagnosed with breast cancer - and she has gone on air to share the news with her fans.
But Jenni (pictured), who lives in Macclesfield, is feeling positive about the illness due to her vast experience with sufferers and told how she is ready to fight.
The mum-of-two, who presents Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4, broke the bad news to her listeners last Thursday (December 21).
The veteran broadcaster said that she would not "be around for a while in the New Year" but added that her "prognosis is excellent" and plans to be back as soon as she feels up to it.
Barnsley-born, Jenni, 56, said: "I've known about the diagnosis for a couple of weeks now. Treatments are very good these days and I know quite a bit about this disease thanks to working on the programme - fingers crossed, I will be all right."
The former Newsnight presenter has written several articles for national newspapers and interviewed many patients and survivors for her radio show.
She praised pop princess, Kylie Minogue's brave fight against the disease in 2003 writing in an Manchester Evening News article that cancer strikes at random and "is not visited upon bad women".
She wrote: "Hundreds and thousands of women make a full recovery after they've had the right treatment for their cancer delivered early enough.
"The ones who die, and I count good friends among them, didn't deserve it, had not been cavalier with their health and fought tooth and nail for survival."
Jenni, speaking to the Express in 1999, said: "Macclesfield is a great town. The countryside is wonderful and when we came up here we were completely knocked out by the place - I love it.
"The great pleasure of the week is when I get off the train on Friday and smell the air."
Mrs Murray was unavailable for comment at time of going to press.
