On your marks for big race

THERE is still time to register to take part in Macclesfield's biggest and most popular charity event of the year - the seventh annual pancake race.

Sixteen teams are already set to take the challenge to beat the McDonald's McFlippers who took home last year's Batterpan Trophy.

The line-up for 2003 already includes three teams of chefs who are going flippin' crazy as they prepare to compete for the town's most sought after trophy.

Both the Macclesfield Hospital and college have registered a team for the event and are hoping to wrestle the prestigious title from the reigning champions.

Last year the Macclesfield Express team (who were affectionately named the 'Express Tossers' by their news editor) came away from the event with their tails between their legs. A certain member of the team - mentioning no names Virginia Bridgewater - dropped the pre-fried pancake losing the team their qualifying position in the final round.

However, a good day was had by all and crowds of people turned out to see the teams raise more than £2,000, for the MAST Scanner Appeal.

The race will take place on Shrove Tuesday (March 4) outside the Town Hall, at noon.

Teams of four will run in relay down Mill Street, tossing their pancakes as they go. The event will be in fancy dress with prizes for the most outrageous.
