Man ordered to pay £450 to replace electronic tag

ONE of the first Macclesfield criminals to be electronically tagged was back in the dock for releasing himself from the monitoring device.

Paul Liam Simpson, 23, of Hawthorn Way, Macclesfield, was ordered to pay £450 to replace the Elmo tag he destroyed when he appeared before the town's magistrates.

He was also given a 12 month conditional discharge.

He admitting criminally damaging the tag, which is similar to a plastic watch strap which is secured to the defendant's ankle for identification and tracking purposes.

Keith Jones, prosecuting, said: "It appears that the defendant removed the device himself and committed the offence of criminal damage while taking it off."

Ruth Oakes, defending, said: "My client has already served his sentence and he has not been in any difficulty since.

"He is still living at home with his mother and he is due to start a new job in January as a packer in a warehouse.

"In the circumstances he has already been penalised for what he has done.

"My client is now using his time a little more constructively."
