Countess given a girl-guided tour of town

25/ 4/2007

GIRLGUIDES from across the borough flocked to the town hall last week, eagerly awaiting their chance to meet their patron, Sophie, The Countess of Wessex.

More than 50 brownies, rainbows and guides were buzzing with excitement as they crowded outside.

"I want to ask her what it's like to be a princess," one wide-eyed eight-year-old said while waiting for the royal visitor.

The countess, president of Girlguiding UK, flew into Treacle Town to a reception for local businesses, hosted by the guides' Cheshire Border branch, to encourage volunteering in the workforce.

Sophie, who arrived by helicopter, was whisked up to the Market Place in a three car entourage, where she was greeted by the mayor and mayoress Councillor Jim and Ina Crockatt.

The countess, dressed in a white crocheted jacket and a formal black skirt, chatted happily to excited youngsters.

One, Jade Collins, eight, from Puss Bank, said: "She said she had been on some pack holidays with the brownies, like the ones I have been on. She was very nice."

Later the countess met representatives from AstraZeneca, BAE Systems, Royal London, Wilmslow, and discussed Employer Supported Volunteering schemes, which help adults fit volunteering around the demands of a working week.

Pauline McKeown, County Commissioner, said: "The event was a great success and we were able to raise awareness of volunteering in Cheshire.

"Volunteering schemes, if implemented well, will pay for themselves and contribute to the skills and well-being of staff."

Fantastic to see Royalty in Macclesfield once again, adding to the towns kudos & raising our profile once more. And what a great story, showing that some Royals can and do add value to Great Britain. Prince's Andrew and Edward should take a leaf of the Countess of Wessex' book and get the wheels of industry moving. Are they not aware that they are a constant source of embarassment to this nation?
