A MOTHER-OF-FOUR says it’s unfair that her campaign against lap dancing in Macclesfield will not be considered by Cheshire East Council.

Margaret Charlton, of Oxford Road, Macclesfield, has been rallying neighbours to send their objections to the council over a proposal to turn Repent nightclub on Mill Street into a lap dancing venue.

But because of council rules, which say only those living in the immediate vicinity have the right to complain, just 40 out of a total of 450 submissions will be considered by the Licensing Committee when it meets on January 7.

Mum-of-four Margaret said: "I don’t feel we’ve been given a fair opportunity to object, a development like this in the town centre is of interest to everyone who uses the town and the bus station.I feel really strongly about this and I know there are lots of people who feel the same. My daughters already say how intimated they feel, what’s it going to be like when a drunk stag party get off the bus to come to the lap dancing club?"

She added: "I won’t let it drop."

A CEC spokeswoman said only those directly affected by noise pollution, activity and disturbance are qualified to object.

She said: "We have had 450 responses approximately, however, we are bound by the council and the secretary of state that we can only take on board those comments from those people within the vicinity."

Applicant Roy Hatton-Garside said: "Lap dancing clubs are not seedy and I think it’s important to stress that the head of Macclesfield police has said he doesn’t have any concerns. It will be a members-only club and because of its location on the inside of the club, will not be visible to the public. There will be strict age checks on the door and female door staff as well as male." The Licensing Committee will meet to make its decision at the Macclesfield town hall at 10am on Thursday, January 7.
