A FESTIVAL of film, music and memories in honour of Macclesfield’s most famous export Joy Division is set to bring fans flocking to the town from far and wide.
Thirty years after Ian Curtis’ death, the Silk Heritage Trust is organising a huge celebration of the band and its local significance – and YOU are invited to get involved.
David Nelson, chairman of the trust, said: "When I became chairman I believed that we needed to connect with different people in Macclesfield and to do something appropriate to reflect the town, and Joy Division is a massively iconic band."
The festival coincides with the anniversary of the lead singer’s death, on May 16, 2010, and will include an exciting programme of events at the Roe Street heritage centre.
There will be special screenings of Joy Division related films, as well as workshops and musical tributes from local bands.
David said: "We had the film (Control) the night before it went on general release and as soon as the words ‘Macclesfield, England’ came up on the screen, everyone cheered. That’s what we want to recreate, a pride in the town."
There are plans to include "experiences" – rather than exhibitions – with artwork, memorabilia and literature on display in an effort to recreate the atmosphere.
David added: "If you were there, if you saw them, if you have any bootleg recordings or old tickets, we would be really interested.
"Perhaps you have a stolen photograph that would never see the light of day, this is the opportunity to put it out there."
The trust is also hoping Maxonians will take the opportunity to remind themselves of what Macclesfield has produced, as well as educate the town’s youngsters.
David added: "Even the EP graphics are iconic, so we will be looking at that side of things also."
To date, £5,000 has been pledged by the Arts Council and Cheshire East Council, and David is confident that more funds will be secured by grants and corporate sponsorship.
If you would like to be involved in the festival, contact Richard De Peyer on 01625 612045, or email director@macclesfield.silk.museum.

Do you always believe wikipedia then? Odd, isn't it, when you deny Joy Division's link to Macc despite the fact that half of the band lived here and this half included the very man who defined their sound and their image and wrote their songs.
Remember the Beatles? Bet you thought they were from Liverpool but they weren't according to your way of looking at the world - half the group lived in Birkenhead.
This is nothing to do with 'making Macclesfield something it isn't'. It's simply telling the story as it is and not as how, apparently, you want it.

You've got a weird perspective. Or maybe you think because, say, the Macc Lads mention Macc a few dozen times, that they've made more of an impact on British pop music than Joy Division.
You can count the number of major rock stars that came out of Macclesfield on less than one hand. And they were in Joy Division.
