A DESPERATE dad is selling advertising space on his bike and children’s buggy in a bid to beat the credit crunch.

Single father Robert Wellings, 23, was forced to quit his job as a farm manager because he couldn’t afford to pay the nursery fees for his two children.

At his wits’ end and struggling to make ends meet, he hatched a madcap scheme to earn money by touting advertising space on his bike and his youngsters’ trailer.

Now he rides around the streets of Macclesfield with Rhiannon, three, and two-year-old Josh in tow.

Robert, who will use Macclesfield town centre as his main patch for work, said: "I was desperate because I’ve worked as a farm manager most of my life, but also had to look after Josh and Rhiannon. I was on income support, couldn’t afford the nursery for both of them, and needed an answer.  I was heading off to visit some family in Wales, and kept seeing trailers on the motorway with advertising on it, and came up with the idea to buy a bike and trailer behind for the kids."

Robert felt the scheme was his only choice in the harsh financial climate, after leaving his job eight months ago.

"I had to be innovative and come up with a solution, it’s the only way."

Robert, who lives in Middlewich, believes this is the first business of its kind, where he can promote any sort of product or service, make money and hopefully look after the toddlers at the same time.

He added: "I’ve got to find a way to get through this. I can’t just roll over and give up, because of the kids. In years to come, if they hit job and money worries, who are they going to look to as a role model?"

The dad is now hoping his new week-old business, Advertising on the Move, which also includes a road-based truck and advert trailer, will attract businesses so he can support his youngsters.
