SOMETIMES it can be lonely at the top.
The cream of the English footballing crop – Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, central defender Rio Ferdinand and Argentinean ace Carlos Tevez, were snapped waiting for a train at Macclesfield Railway Station on Saturday (September 20).
The Champions League winners looked in a pensive mood as they waited for a ride to London to take on arch-rivals Chelsea in a bitter Sunday match which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Stephen Barker, 50, of St Michael’s Terrace, Macclesfield, was on hand to catch the United superstars as they waited – all alone – on the platform.
"I can see the train station from my back garden and I was doing a bit of gardening. When I saw them I jumped up, grabbed my camera, headed down there and thought ‘I’ll get a couple of pictures of them’," said the maintenance engineer.
"Surprisingly, they went quite unnoticed and were just sat there on their own on the platform waiting for the train down to London. You might think they would get a plane down, but it’s a lot less hassle getting the train from Macclesfield – you’ll be there in just two hours."
But far from being star-struck, the father-of-one decided to give Sir Alex a bit of footballing advice.
Stephen, a regular Macclesfield Town spectator and Manchester United fan, added: "I said he should get a defender who plays like Martin Buchan used to, but I don’t think he seemed too impressed with my idea.
"But they were really nice though and I got a picture taken with Rio and his autograph before they headed to the platform."
He chuckled: "I reckon I could have shown them a thing or two in my day. I played a little bit like Rio, the big man at the back with some silky skills."
