The Red Lion pub car park was saved after a planning application to build ten houses on it was withdrawn
Campaigners fear planning u-turn is ‘plot in the game’

A BUILDING company’s u-turn on a planning application which threatened closure of a pub car park is part of "a plot in the game".
That was the fear of Bollington town councillor Sylvia Roberts when H Cumberbirch & Son Ltd withdrew their plans to build 14 houses in the Happy Valley.
The company bowed down after residents’ uproar at the prospect of losing the valuable parking space.
She said: "We will see if the Cumberbirch withdrawal is permanent or just another plot in the game."
The proposal involved four houses built on land enclosed by Cumberland Drive, Lord Street and Chancery Lane, and ten on The Red Lion Pub car park on High Street.
And Coun Roberts’ concerns are shared by residents.
John Davies, 55, who runs the High Street-based pub with partner Pauline Smith, 40, said: "For now we just don’t know what’s in the pipeline, we are in limbo. First we thought we’d lose the car park because of the ten houses possibly being built on it, then we thought we were safe.
"All we can do is hope we can come to an agreement with the owners that will suit us both. Until then we will carry on using the car park."
Just last month, 72 furious residents crammed into Bollington Town Hall to strongly oppose the plan, amid parking congestion fears.
Tim Boddington, Bollington Civic Society vice chairman, said: "This shows how important it is to have an alert and active civic society ready and able to challenge applications of this kind. Such societies gain their strength from their membership."
But Coun Roberts added: "I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they reapplied. They own the pub car park and other land so are sure to do something with it eventually. I do fear for the landlord of the pub. It’s important for Bollington that as much parking is retained as possible."
Currently John’s brewery, Scottish & Newcastle, rent the parking spots from the Fence Avenue-based building contractors – H Cumberbirch & Son Ltd – who have chosen not to comment on the issue.
