Booze ban in Tytherington

RESIDENTS are hoping to "live in peace" after areas of Tytherington were placed under an alcohol prohibition order.

Licensing committee members gave a motion the nod at Macclesfield Town Hall yesterday (Tuesday, September 16), meaning signs will be placed at appropriate places within a designated zone from Monday, October 20.

Christine Cooke, chairman of the Tytherington Links Open Space Project (TLOSP), had initially written to the council saying the play area off Sandwich Drive had been vandalised. And, after a public consultation, the 47-year-old is delighted with the final outcome.

She said: "It’s really positive. I’m very hopeful that residents can live in peace now it’s been implemented. Hopefully people will adhere to the new signs and not cause bother. It can only help."

The order means police can seize alcohol from those causing nuisance or anti-social behaviour – with failure to comply a criminal offence.

The proposed zone is bounded to the west by Westminster Road and the Riverside Local Nature Reserve, to the north by the northern boundary of Tytherington Wood and Marlborough Drive, to the east by Tytherington Drive, Brocklehurst Way and the Silk Road, and to the south by Hibel Road, Beech Lane and Coare Street.

Dale Hawtin, neighbourhood police officer for Tytherington and Prestbury, said: "It will help a lot. Local residents will benefit from this and will be able to live in peace."

Tytherington councillor Brendan Murphy said a special thanks must go to Christine.

"There was an overwhelming response from the consultation supporting the order," he said. "This will give the police power to deal with youngsters who are maybe getting out of control. It takes us back to the old days when local policemen could deal with action directly.  Kids seem to like pushing the boundaries for some reason, but this could put a stop to it. Councillor James Nicholas will be happy as his dog lost a leg not long ago after tripping on broken glass in the designated area."
