Sir Nick under fire over climate views

AN EAST Cheshire Green party member has slammed Sir Nicholas Winterton’s comments on global warming.

Just days after the MP released a column in the Macclesfield Express (Wednesday, August 27), entitled ‘Embrace Global Warming and Enjoy’, one key party player is on the warpath.

Lindy Brett, of Blakelow Road, Macclesfield, a local party contact for the East Cheshire Green Party, said: "As an authority in Macclesfield, Sir Nick should shut up about it. He seems to have changed his position on climate change and now thinks it’s not caused by human activity. Over 90 per cent of scientists think it is caused by human activity and we have to look at them to evaluate this – not MPs such as Sir Nick."

One of the Tory MPs claims was that there is no proof that global warming is caused by the rise of greenhouse gases, mainly from human activity.

And the Macclesfield MP said: "The aim of my article was to present a balanced report on an important subject matter. If I cannot do this as a politician then Parliament could not do this topic justice. Scientists are not agreed on how much human activity contributes to global warming. People of Macclesfield must accept that climate change is brought about by a variety of causes, not just human activity."

But Lindy added: "I think he should respect the work of the vast majority of scientists and consider how society can move forward in leading us to reduce use of climate changing gases. He’s not an expert in science or climate change. I respect his hard work for the Macclesfield constituency, but he’s not an expert on the matter. We need oil, but need to conserve it and use it for more important things – not just splash it around."

David Whalley, a Macclesfield scientist and former research chemist for ICI, said: "Even if you don’t accept the science, anything that saves fuel is well worth doing. There’s scientific evidence that global warming is happening and it is caused by human activity.

"People of Macclesfield need to try and car share more, take the train when possible and use well controlled heating systems in their homes to stop wasting energy."

In his column, Sir Nick commented that a slight increase in temperature could actually be good for creatures such as polar bears.

He said: "Carbon dioxide is a vital element in the life of plants. An increase in Co2 levels drives up crop yields world over. It is also proven that a slight increase in temperature increases algae in the oceans, increasing fish populations, resulting in more food for the polar bear, the animal many people fear is most in danger from the effects of global warming."

This week, Sir Nick added: "I respect the Green Party for their stance, but fear they may over-estimate the level of influence we all have on global warming."."

Out of touch, selfish, inept, sometimes I run short of adjectives to describe someone but never Boss Hogg.

No doubt his snout is in the trough of those companies whose products cause global warming. A man like this is morally bankrupt and only comments when it is his own personal interest or of the elites that he represents.

What a thoroughly factually barren article by the Macclesfield MP. The Green Party doesn't get good marks either; it's good for MPs to speak up, if they do so based on the facts on hand.
