Cheshire Building Society jobs axed

by Pete Bainbridge
27/ 8/2008

CHESHIRE Building Society has announced that it will be axing 15 to 20 jobs at its Macclesfield head quarters on Castle Street in the town centre.

The firm announced it would be reducing the workforce at the building by "about three per cent" and blamed the current downturn in the economy for the decision.

As well as the redundancies, more workers will be asked to relocate to other branches in the north west, a spokesman said. The news will come as another blow for the town centre as one of its most well-known businesses must cut employees in the current economic climate.

The Cheshire spokeswoman said there was no plan to close the office, but confirmed: "As part of our consultation process, we are looking at improving our efficiency and services for our members, and meet our members needs. Redundancies will affect around three per cent of the 490 staff from head office (in Macclesfield). One area we are doing the most work is relocation of existing employees."

She said "roughly 15 to 20" employees would be affected by redundancy, but could not say how many would be "relocated" until the consultation process is completed in September.

Karen Hughes, spokeswoman for Cheshire Building Society Staff Association, representing the workers, said: "We regret any redundancies are taking place, but in our current economic climate, redundancies can be expected.

"The staff association is currently in consultation with the society, and will be available at all times to look after its members. The number of redundancies are not as bad as redundancies taking place in other areas of the finance sector. The workforce have been informed, and we will be supporting our members through these difficult times."

MoganGirl you are such a rebel. Were you in the Tooting Popular Front? Encouraging insurrection and rebellion like this is terrible. If Gareth Woods is reading this (he seems to spend alot of time on the forum, I imagine him to be like one of the fat detectives in the Fast Show - munching a 10am pasty livener from Greggs or a lunchtime Kebab)then please bring MoganGirl to justice!
