There's trouble at mill

13/ 8/2008

RESIDENTS have hit out at planners after they gave the green light to build 66 apartments in and around a derelict Bollington mill.

The borough’s planning committee discussed the proposal for nearly two hours before giving consent subject to approval by the Government Office North West and a satisfactory report from the Environment Agency.

But residents who live near Ingersley Vale Mill in Bollington are frustrated and intend to mount further opposition.

Lynn Daley, 58, of Church Street, said: "The apartment and town house design is totally out of keep with the area – in the end it will look like a 1960s slum. The amount of traffic along Church Street will be awful, it’s going to be a catastrophe and we are going to have to carry on living here."

Despite being situated in the Rainow parish, the mill is only accessible by vehicle from the Bollington side. Bollington Town Council expressed concerns overtraffic congestion and flood risk but supported the application. The mill is set to be converted into 24 apartments while 24 additional apartments and 18 townhouses with landscaping and car parking will be built on the site.

Tim Boddington, chairman of Bollington Civic Society, said: "It is a derelict site and we want something done about it. Getting it cleared up and developed will be a good thing."

Bollington resident John Barratt, whose company Ingersley Vale LLP is behind the project, said: "This is positive for Bollington and Rainow. We are getting rid of an eyesore and a haven for drug addicts."
