You'll have to wait for those Waitrose diggers

POYNTON’S shoppers will have to wait at least two years before their new village supermarket is opened, the company has confirmed.

Building work on the 16,000 sq ft Park Lane store will not even start until next summer.

Waitrose was given the green light to build by MBC in May this year, but since the dust has settled, uncertainty has grown in the area over when the diggers will move in.

A spokeswoman for the supermarket confirmed this week: "We will not start work on the Poynton store until summer 2009, which was our plan from the beginning. It is likely to be an 18-month project, and we hope to open in autumn 2010."

She denied that the "credit crunch" had any affect on the time scale for the Poynton outlet.

Keith Lambert, spokesman for Poynton Partnership of Traders and owner of Mates DIY on Park Lane said: "It’s probably a good thing. Poynton is quiet (in retail terms) like the rest of the country, and I can’t imagine diggers and trucks going up and down Park Lane would help that.

"No doubt it would create a few problems with traffic. The fact they aren’t starting yet is probably a blessing in disguise."

Poynton West Councillor Gabor Bartos hopes the extra time will allow a better arrangement to be found over parking at the supermarket.

"I am unhappy that Waitrose are saying they do not plan to build their own car park," he said.

"The car park around the civic hall is free and it is a precious commodity. It is just arrogance for a company to use one that is already there. It is a commercial investment so they should provide their own.

"If it is the people of Poynton who benefit, then I will welcome it."

When built, the Waitrose will stand on the site of Vernon Building Society, which will relocate further down Park Lane.

So Anti Luddite thinks because 2600 mpeople signed a petition it should not have happened. What about the 13000 that didn't sign it? I thought we lived in a democracy.

Quite frankly, if Waitrose never start work, Poynton will be better off! This ugly building is the wrong development by the wrong company to benefit all but a few non-food traders in the village. The resulting traffic will be a nightmare. How the planners let it happen beats me! 2,600 local people petitioned against it.
