Heir he comes - Prince Edward is visiting town
Ben Turner18/ 6/2008
PRINCE Edward arrives in Macclesfield on Friday (June 20) in the highest profile Royal visit since the Queen’s jubilee celebrations in 2002.
The Earl of Wessex – who is seventh in line to the throne – will tour several prominent sites in the town including Macclesfield Hospital, the town hall and the new £38 million "Learning Zone".
The Queen’s youngest son follows in the footsteps of his wife, the Countess of Wessex, who was welcomed by Maxonians on a visit to the town hall last year.
Full details are yet to be released, but his Royal Highness, the Earl of Wessex, will arrive in the town in the morning and during his tour is due to make an award presentation to a local voluntary organisation.
The father-of-two will also officially open two state-of-the-art new wards – stroke and elderly care facilities boasting 54 beds between them – during a walkabout at Macclesfield Hospital.
John Wilbraham, East Cheshire NHS Trust chief executive, said: "We are eagerly looking forward to welcoming Prince Edward to Macclesfield Hospital to officially open the new wards and would like to thank him for his interest in our work."
He was only the fourth-ever Royal to gain a university degree when he read history at Cambridge and in 2002 retired from a career in theatre production to concentrate on his public duties. There have been a number of prominent Royal visits since the turn of the millenium.
As part of her national tour six years ago to mark her 50th year on the throne, the Queen met Maxonian youngsters at King’s School. The Prince of Wales was last in the borough in 2003 during a visit to Jodrell Bank Observatory, while Princess Anne made her last appearance in 2005.
The Countess of Wessex visited Tatton Park and met girl guides at Macclesfield Town Hall last year. Prince Andrew – at 48, Edward’s elder brother by four years – has not been to Silk Town since officially opening the town hall extension a decade ago. But Maxonians are still awaiting their first glimpse of Prince William and Prince Harry.
