Cannabis farmer
Ben Turner21/ 5/2008
THIS is Chinese immigrant Ah Tong Lin, a man discovered working as a cannabis ‘farmer’ behind the closed curtains of a seemingly normal Macclesfield semi-detached house.
Lin, who made a seven-month journey to arrive in Britain, spent his working day tending to hundreds of ‘skunk’ plants grown with the aid of powerful lights.
His story gives a fascinating insight into the lives of the people put to work in the ‘factories’ that supply Britain’s insatiable demand for cannabis.
Paying thousands to Chinese gangsters for his passage to England, Lin is exactly the sort of desperate character recruited to work in operations such as the house where he was discovered, or huge cannabis farms like the one found on Bridge Street, Macclesfield, in April.
Amazingly Lin claimed that he thought he was growing Chinese herbs and that there was nothing illegal about his ‘job’.
Standing bewildered and frightened in court, he was sentenced to two years in prison and will be deported back to China, probably on his release.
