Waste collection is sold off

14/ 5/2008

MACCLESFIELD Borough Council has thrown out some of their waste services without telling customers.

The council has sold off commercial waste collection service to a private contractor from "outside the area" for an undisclosed sum.

The only inkling customers had of the move was an addition to routine letters which indicated a change to contractural obligation, allowing them to sell off services.

A council spokesman said the council was not obliged to let customers know as it was a commercial decision.

He added: "This will be more cost-effective for customers and is in their interests. We are under no obligation to let people know and the amount we sold it for is confidential."

He said he couldn’t say exactly when the service had been sold. Paul Morgan, Corporate Manager for Streetscene at Macclesfield Borough Council, said: "In a joint venture with other East Cheshire councils, Congleton and Crewe and Nantwich, we’ve sold the commercial waste collection service to a private contractor not currently active in the area.

"This will prove more cost-effective for customers."
