Crematorium team shortlisted

8/ 5/2008

MACCLESFIELD Crematorium may not see any of its customers return for a second time, but you can rest assured the service they provide is exemplary.

Macclesfield Borough Council’s Bereavement Services Team have been shortlisted for top honours at the nationwide Council Worker of the Year Awards.

The team have buried themselves in their work to ensure they provide the highest standard of service, with the best possible help and guidance to bereaved families.

The judges commended their work and their innovative ideas, such as developing environmentally friendly permanent bird box memorials and local initiatives with schools and council rangers to create a successful partnership and increase understanding of the service they provide.

They have also assisted family history groups and created a successful heritage trail around the cemetery, which attracts large groups of people interested in learning about the graveyard shift.

The winners will be announced on July 3 and Macclesfield Borough Council is calling on everyone who appreciates the team to vote.

Mark Wheelton, Corporate Manager for Community and Wellbeing, said: "It’s a tremendous honour for the team to be shortlisted. They work very hard and have a great reputation. So much so that the service has been ranked as one of the best in the country by the Institutes to Cemeteries and Crematorium Management."

The nomination comes shortly before veteran employee Joan Williams retires from the team on May 22.

Joan, who will turn 60 the following day, has worked as a crematorium assistant for 22 years.

She said: "It’s a satisfying job because it’s a time when people need you and they often come back to talk to us after they’ve been to visit someone.

"You feel good that you’re helping people and it’s the last thing that anybody can do – it’s respectable."

Joan, of Howe Street, is looking forward to spending more time with her husband Basil, gardening, knitting and learning to swim.

She said: "I’ll miss it very much. But I like knitting and I’m hoping to learn to swim. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do."
