MACCLESFIELD FOREST: Lesley Smetham (Con)

MY INTEREST in people and in the environment led me to study social sciences with the Open University. As a mature student, I gained an MA in Environment, Policy and Society. My interest in politics is based on the wish to improve life for all local residents regardless of political persuasion, while respecting the environment.
I understand the importance of engaging with local people in order to hear their concerns My strengths include the ability to listen, pay attention to detail and work in a team in order to generate ideas for problem solving.
I live in Gawsworth, within Macclesfield Forest area, stood as a prospective councillor in South Ward for the past two years and understand issues that affect us.
Recent roles I’ve undertaken locally are:
- Parish Councillor for Gawsworth and Chair during 2003-2005 and Chair and Trustee for the John Upton Charity
- Governor of Gawsworth Primary School and chair of the Marketing and Communication Sub-Committee
- Secretary and Trustee of the Family History Society of Cheshire and Research Centre Co-ordinator for this society and their representative to the North West Regional Archives Council. Member of the Communication and Publicity Sub-committee of the Federation of Family History Societies
- Chair of Macclesfield Civic Society.
Last year I was accepted by Macclesfield Borough Council on to the Standards Board as one of the Parish Council representatives and I am familiar with the procedures of council meetings.
