JAMES NICHOLAS lives locally, member of Tytherington Golf Club, passionate about Welsh rugby. Last year, he was elected to be the second councillor for Tytherington.

He flies his own plane, sailed in the Tall Ships race and loves walking his two Labradors, likes cooking, grows his own herbs and does “boring stuff” like reading and swimming.

Following the footsteps of his father, Sir David Nicholas, distinguished journalist and former ITN Chief Executive, James started his career with a Fleet Street News Agency.

As a TV newsman with Channel 4 News, Sky News, CNN and other broadcasters, he has lived in the USA, Russia, China, Africa, Australia and Middle East. He has witnessed revolutions and elections, famines and disasters.

He has risked life and limb in some of the hottest war zones - Iraq, Rwanda, Chechnya, N Ireland, North Korea, revolution in Romania and the ‘snipers alley’ of Sarajevo.

He won international acclaim for his exposure of the Bosnian concentration camps and was one of the first journalists into Baghdad in the first Gulf War. His proudest moment was being with Nelson Mandela the day he was elected President of the new South Africa.

Following his election to the Council, he took an immediate interest in environmental issues and his persistent demands for the recycling of plastics has forced the Council to start planning moves in that direction. He has also played a lead role in getting support for improved play areas.

James was motivated to enter local politics by his experience of seeing people in other countries who risked life and limb to win the right to vote.
