MACCLESFIELD WEST: John Knight (Green)

18/ 4/2008

JOHN is 46 years old, employed in the research department of a major Trade Union. Originally from Stockport, he and his wife have lived in Macclesfield since 2002 with their young son, who attends a local state primary school.

Having joined the Green Party in 2005, John has stood in Borough Council elections on a number of occasions, achieving 17% of the vote in Rainow in 2006.

He is an Open University student, having graduated as Bachelor of Arts in December 2007. A keen hill-walker, he is a member of the Long Distance Walkers Association.

"East Cheshire is badly in need of an integrated, affordable public transport network," says John. "Under the present chaotic set-up, while you can easily catch a bus from Macclesfield to Crewe or Congleton, it is difficult to get to somewhere like Knutsford in the evenings or on Sundays. Commuting to Manchester, as I and many others have to, is hideously expensive by train. We also need a comprehensive cycling strategy – at the moment, cyclists take their lives in their hands on most routes out of town."

A Housing Association tenant himself, John vigorously supports the provision and retention of affordable and social housing, vital to the future of all communities. "If elected," he says, "I will press the Council to maximise the availability of truly affordable housing within new developments, make funding for social housing a priority and oppose new building on Green Belt land or on flood plains."
