Tesco plan defeated

TESCO’S grand designs for Macclesfield were dealt yet another blow last week as plans for a store in Broken Cross hit the bottom of the town hall’s bin.

Hot on the heels of two other refusals, borough councillors unanimously rejected the supermarket’s application to build an "Express" outlet on the J and P Rose garage site, on Chelford Road.

At the meeting, Councillor Ainsley Arnold accused the company of trying to "drive out competition" and said: "We should just rename the town ‘Tesco Town’."

Recently, MBC’s planning committee knocked back the multinational’s schemes for a 15,000 square ft shop in Poynton, and a 197ft roundabout on the Silk Road which the company said would allow better access to the Hibel Road superstore.

At the latest MBC planning meeting, resident Martin Weinberg, who lives on Gawsworth Road, nearly 500ft from the JP Rose site, said: "We wish to register our strongest objection to the siting of the store.

"With businesses such as this you inevitably get an increase in traffic which exacerbates the already serious road congestion caused by the hospital and people doing the school run.

"It could create a serious road safety problem and a road safety programme must be implemented now to stop death and injury, which is a real possibility."

Shaun Taylor, acting on behalf of Tesco, said: "The store is about the size of a tennis court. National and local policy supports it and it is suitable for this location.

"The highways engineer has not raised any objections."

He added there would be 21 parking spaces.

Coun Arnold said: "I am very disappointed with the lacklustre highways report. We have to look into the future. If we have a high proportion of vehicles going into this proposed property we have to look at that.

"And it is not just the highways issue. We should just rename the town Tesco town. We have a large one in the town, outside the town and now this. They are trying to drive out any competition. Smaller shops cannot compete with the buying power of Tesco."

Coun Alift Harewood added: "I would like to recommend refusal mainly because of the traffic. It has got to be seen to be believed. People living on Gawsworth Road can’t get on to the road in the morning.

"How this dangerous thing can be allowed I do not know. It is just an addition to the discomfort and danger that residents are experiencing already."

Was the planning application judged on its merits, or was this just an excuse to have an easy go at big, bad Tesco?

If my memory serves me correctly, there are 3 Co-ops within a mile radius of Broken Cross, A convenience store on site, and an all night garage with shop facilities...seems like enough to me....Your council planning office should be congratulated.
