Police appeal for CCTV help from firms

12/12/2007

POLICE have appealed to businesses and homeowners in the Shaw Street area to hand in any CCTV footage of the night of the alleged assault on John Leonard, as it may contain vital evidence.

Detectives are asking for video and still images of the surrounding streets from Thursday night (December 6) and Friday morning (December 7).

Inspector Gareth Woods, head of Macclesfield’s Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "At the end of the day, in any investigation like this we have to ask if there is a little bit of evidence out there that we haven’t found.

"We know where the borough council and retail CCTV cameras are, but there may be small businesses and homeowners who have gone that extra mile and installed their own CCTV.

"It’s all about doing the best job we can, covering all angles and checking all possibilities. All sorts of cases have been solved with little bits of CCTV, and the person who had it didn’t even know how important it was.

"I urge anyone with any CCTV footage of that night and the following day to get in touch and help us."

John Leonard died at Macclesfield Hospital in the early hours of Saturday, December 8.

  • Anyone with CCTV footage, or anyone with information about the incident in general, should call Macclesfield Police on 0845 458 0000 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
