Dozens of events are taking place across Macclesfield to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Children at Bosley St Mary’s Primary School made the most of the good weather with a patriotic garden party and sports day, while the more mature members of the community enjoyed an afternoon celebration hosted by Macclesfield’s Age Uk.

Age UK guests enjoyed tea, cake, entertainment, sing-alongs and a visit from Macclesfield Mayor Alift Harewood-Jones during their afternoon celebration for the Queen’s 90th Birthday.

The event was also organised to help tackle the issue of loneliness among older people in Cheshire East, and the Queen’s birthday was the perfect excuse for getting together and making new friends.

Damon Taylor, chief executive at Age UK Cheshire East, said: “At Age UK Cheshire East, we don’t believe loneliness should be an inevitable part of growing older and we’re always looking for new opportunities to get people together.

“We got great feedback and everyone seemed to have a good time so we’ll look to organise more events like this going forward.

“Huge thanks to Cheshire East Council for providing us with a grant which helped towards costs of the event.”

Teacher Rachel Mortishire-Smith said the children enjoyed glorious sunshine for their royal street part in the playground at St Mary’s.

She said: “The staff and children set out a street party of picnic tables and bunting all along the driveway, with added decorations and union-jack picnic lunch-boxes provided by our cook. We made our own crowns, baked and decorated extra cakes and came dressed in all-things red, white and blue, donating £1 each for charity as we did so.

“The day before, children in Creative Club replanted all our tubs with red, white and blue flowers kindly donated by Sylvia and Mrs Burton.

“Bobkins joined us for lunch and a huge amount of fun was had by all, eating outside in the festive atmosphere.”

The party was followed by the school’s sports day with children earning stickers for their house teams.
