Residents woke with no running water or electricity today as 60 homes and farms, mostly in the Buxton New Road area, had their services stopped.

Shop-owners on Buxton Road even reported a small scale rush on bottled water with concerned customers not knowing where their next cup of tea was coming from.

Electricity North West said that the temporary interruption was caused by a fault on the overhead power line reported at 5am, but speedy engineers had managed to fix the problem by 9.30 am.

Water companies have advised customers that they may be in for a slightly longer wait before services are restored.

United Utilities said: "A team of engineers has been requested to attend and should be on site by 11am or as soon as possible.

"We’re sorry for the trouble this may be causing you and we will get your taps flowing normally again as quickly as we can."
