A rapist who preyed on women and girls over a 50 year period has been jailed for 18 years.

Colin Young, 82, of Knutsford Walk, Macclesfield, subjected three victims to sexual assaults in Macclesfield beginning in the 1950s.

During a trial at Chester Crown Court he denied all 14 offences he was accused of including sexual assault, indecent assault, rape and attempted rape. But a jury found him guilty of 11 charges, including two counts of rape, eight counts of indecent assault and a sexual assault.

He was found not guilty of rape, attempted rape and indecent assault.

The jury heard claims that the defendant’s behaviour was ‘predatory’.

Prosecutor Owen Evans described Young as “an old man with a dark secret: a sexual interest in young girls”.

Speaking after the trial DC Alison Broadbent hailed the bravery of Young’s victims adding: “The sentencing of Young is a reflection of how brave the victims have been in coming forward and speaking about what happened to them after such a long time.

“I hope the guilty verdict will bring them some closure and allow them to move forward with their lives.”
