Maxonians have swept the board at this year’s Local Hero Awards.

The annual event celebrates the outstanding achievements and inspiring individuals across Cheshire East, hosted by Silk 106.9 and sponsored by Cheshire East Council.

And this year eight out of the 12 gongs awarded went to Macclesfield residents. The Best Teacher award went to Lisa Cotterill, 49, from Macclesfield, who juggles life with multiple sclerosis and still goes above and beyond for her pupils at Macclesfield College.

The Young Achiever award went to Molly Jarrett, 12, from Bollington, for her contribution to school and community life.

Molly is an outstanding gymnast who coaches others and has raised more than £800 for charity, raising funds for Macmillan and donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust.

Neighbour of the Year went to Kay Evans, from Bollington, who cared for a neighbour who had suffered from a stroke for several years, visiting her in hospital and cooking her meals once she became bed-ridden.

Following her neighbour’s death, Kay has continued to look after another 70-year-old neighbour who has undergone hip and knee replacements.

The Carer award went to Sophie Goodman, from Macclesfield, who helps a single parent care for her two young boys who suffer chronic health problems including epilepsy and learning difficulties which mean they can suffer up to 200 seizures a day.

Carla Glider, of Carla Glider Fitness in Bollington won the Sports Person award after raising more than £10,000 for East Cheshire Hospice and for achievements in county and international netball.

The Social Enterprise award went to Cheryl Simpson, 50, from Poynton, who set up Space4Autism following her own son’s diagnosis with autism.

And Mike and Lucy Carroll, from Poynton, won the Parent/Guardian award. The couple, whose children Ollie and Amelia suffer from Batten’s Disease, have raised £1,000s to fund research into the disease through their charity campaign ‘Ollie’s Army’.

“It’s important to pay tribute to people doing such brilliant work in our communities.”
