POLICE were involved in a 90-minute stand off with a man armed with knives.

The incident began at 9pm on Tuesday after a man in his twenties allegedly ‘throttled’ his mother at a house on Peel Street, Macclesfield.

When officers arrived they found the man at the house armed with two knives, police said.

He refused to come out and had cut both arms.

It prompted a large-scale emergency response with 15 police, some dressed in riot gear with shields, and a negotiator.

Police closed off both ends of Peel Street while they talked the man down.

Witnesses said the man was seen “shouting from the first floor window”.

At 10.30pm the man agreed to leave the house and was arrested on suspicion of affray.

He was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital with injuries to both arms and loss of blood, and underwent surgery today (January 27).

Today, witnesses described ‘bloodstained walls and pavement’ near the scene.
