Two children born with rare heart conditions are leading their friends on a fundraising mission.

Ted Rourke, three, and Hannah Storer, eight, from Macclesfield, are getting behind the British Heart Foundation’s Wear It, Beat It campaign, which raises money to support research.

Hannah, who goes to Prestbury Primary School, and Ted, who is at the nursery, were both born with congenital heart defects and needed life-saving surgery.

And on Friday the plucky pair will be leading their friends and siblings on a series of physical challenges around the school field. All the children and teachers will also be supporting the campaign by wearing red clothes. The school will use the money they raise through sponsorship to buy a defibrillator at the school and make a donation to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, where Ted and Hannah had their life-saving treatment.

Ted’s mum Sian, from Tytherington, said: “The whole school – including Ted’s brother Milo – will be doing a one mile walk around the school field. This is because for a child to walk one mile it is the equivalent to an adult running a marathon. The infants will walk but the juniors will be doing a ‘mini tough mudder’ course.”

Ted was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, which stops oxygen being pumped around the body.

It is a rare condition which affects about one in every 3,000 babies.

Ted had to endure major surgery to correct the problem and spent the first three months of his life in Alder Hey.

His bravery earned him the nickname ‘Super Ted’ after the cartoon bear.

Hannah was rushed to hospital with breathing problems when she was just two weeks old and was diagnosed with Pulmonary Atresia with ventricular septal defect.

She suffered two cardiac arrests and spent weeks in intensive care before undergoing major surgery.

While she continues to have treatment for her condition, Hannah isn’t letting it get in her way.

Mum Rachel, from Tytherington, said: “Hannah is lively and happy girl who won’t let it stop her playing with her friends and five-year-old brother Ben. She has regular check-ups at Alder Hey which continues to be the most amazing, wonderful place. We are just happy to be involved in this event to be able to give something back to the hospital.”
