A pensioner was caught drink driving after learning of her ex-husband’s ‘three-year affair’, a court heard.

Sheila Rowbottom, 65, drank two glasses of wine and drove to get more alcohol, the hearing was told.

She was caught when police attended to talk to her about another matter, prosecutors said.

At Stockport magistrates court, Rowbottom, of Gawsworth Close, Poynton, admitted drink driving.

Eileen Rogers, prosecuting, said: “On September 24 at 7pm, Pc Romlance was attending Gawsworth Close to speak to the defendant on another matter.

“There were no lights on at the house. While the officer was waiting, a Mercedes appeared behind her and she moved to allow it in the drive.

“The defendant got out of the car and appeared to struggle to put her key in the front door. She was clearly unsteady on her feet and slurring her words. She claimed she had only had one glass of wine.” The court heard that Rowbottom’s breathalyser reading was 101mg. The legal limit is 35mg. Peter Malone, defending, said: “She had been through a difficult divorce and found out certain matters which made her upset, so she drank.”

A probation officer told the court that Rowbottom split up from her husband in 2015, but found out on the day of the incident that ‘he had been having a three year affair’. She then drank two glasses of wine before going out to the shop for more, the court heard.

She was banned for 25 months and ordered to complete rehabilitation activities.
