A new playground specifically for children with additional needs has been built thanks to fundraisers.

The adapted play area has been completed at Park Lane School, Macclesfield, a specialist school for children with difficulties with interaction and communication.

It means children can play independently and safely, with equipment designed to suit their needs.

Tessa Hannersley, early years foundations stage teacher, said: “It’s amazing. The children are absolutely thrilled with it, it’s a joy.”

The playground, for children in the early years programme, boasts a range of equipment designed to help the children develop.

It includes a seated swing, a tower slide, a grassed hill and a play house.

Tessa added: “Before the space was very underuse and not really fit for purpose, now it is absolutely wonderful. It’s been specifically built with our pupils in mind and gives them freedom for independent exploration.

“We’ve got these lovely raised beds which are wheelchair accessible, and we’ve put some port holes in the gates so the children can look out and see beyond the playground.”

The park, which cost £25,000, was funded thanks to charitable efforts of supporters, including staff member Suzie McNulty, who rasied sponsorship money by trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro, fundraising by the Friends of Park Lane Special School Charity, and a donation from Lowerhouses Consultancy.

It also includes £10,000 donation from Morrisons.

Headteacher Lorraine Warmer added: “It’s fantastic to see the pupils learning so much and having fun activities in the new outdoor play area. Previously the space was not fit for purpose and we are so grateful to Morrisons and all the FOPLSS fundraisers for making the new playground possible’.

Mari Hemsley, from Morrisons in Poynton, said money came from the sale of carrier bags after the compulsory 5p charge was brought in.

She said: “We decided to keep that money separate and create as special fund for the community. We were very happy to be able to help.”

The Friends’ next project is to refurbish the Hydrotherapy Pool and build a play area for older pupils. If you can help contact admin@parklane.cheshire.sch.uk or call 01625 384040.
